I. Main research activity: two main types of membranes for PEM FCs and electrolysers, based on polybenzimidazole (PBI), are under development:
1. Proton (H+) conducting membranes:
a) Low/ medium temperature membranes – operating temperature up to 120 °C:
PBI containing immobilized phosphonic and/ or sulfonic acid groups:
b) High temperature membranes – operating temperature up to 180 °C: phosphoric acid (PA) doped PBI membranes with improved mechanical properties and proton conductivity:
2. Anion (OH-) conducting membranes – PBI membranes, doped with KOH:
a) Membranes from crosslinked m-, p- and AB-PBI;
b) Composite membranes of m-, p- and AB-PBI, containing inorganic filler montmorillonite.
Some of the membranes prepared exhibit excellent mechanical properties and ion conductivity over 1200 mS. cm-1, i.e. 10 orders of magnitude higher than the KOH doped m-PBI membranes reported in literature (120 mS.cm-1).
